where the air meets the water

A pair of intersecting outdoor plays
for one actor and one audience member

About the Play

It's the third anniversary of the night AJ and Cara met. But they haven't spoken in weeks. AJ has a mysterious gift bag that Cara gave them on the night they met, unopened. It's time to give it back.

In separate monologues each performed for one audience member, AJ and Cara walk around Chicago and reveal more about themselves and their relationship. Finally, they meet at Lake Michigan, at a fork in the road for their future.

Production History

Full Production - Avalanche Theatre, May 2021

Cara gave it to me exactly three years ago.
When she first moved to Chicago.
She told me, “Give this back to me in three years.
Don’t open it.”
It was the first night we met.
We were both drunk.
I don’t know why or how she singled me out, because I saw her walking around with this stupid gift bag for half the night, but for some reason she walked right up to me.
She said, “You look like someone I can trust.”
Those were the first words she said to me.

I said, “Do I?”
She laughed at that.

I think we became friends because we had the same way of speaking around the things we really wanted to say.
